Anyway, this gentleman, whom I was calling ‘ Uncle’ by now, in the good Indian way, had never ‘ held’ anyone’s hand, not even his sons’ or wife’s, or his parents’. It was a first time, and I did not know what a serious dilemma his was – the aloneness right there, the loss, the unknown quantity of such isolation, in a crowded nation. ( He was a Science Teacher, and the school had sent him because there was a sponsored seat in this Workshop, and no students. This was a beach resort in Chennai, he must have liked the idea of a holiday and agreed. After three days of the Workshop, Uncle T and I got talking, and it was not about Science. ).
Today seeing this post, reminded me of Uncle T, the tears in his eyes. He said the only time they had held his hand was when he was arrested very young for something he had never done. Quite something, uh?
Now, am unsure if it is a safe/ sane offer anymore, to hold people’s hands outside of home anymore, but exceptions apply, right? And there are people we know, who visit old people’s homes and other institutes, talking to inmates, playing carrom boards and chess, going out for walks, a drive.
If an animal can need company, just think what we humans need, and if we do not get it, what we can become :

Elephants are SOCIAL ANIMALS, so this is far beyond cruel. You can tell by her body language that she’s terrified. Elephants will hold the trunks and tails of other elephants, very much like how humans hold hands. They do it for affection, and so the babies won’t ‘lag behind’ when they’re all walking together. They also hold each others tails when they’re scared. This poor girl is so scared and lonely that she’s holding her own tail! This sort of behavior is absolutely inhumane.
This planet earth does not belongs only to humans but to all living beings.
When rain falls,
when rivers rise,
when skies blaze and-
when suns scorch, and earths-
quake, then I know with you,
I too know, these are not just signs of crime,
or mountain gods’ ire,
these are the times we know we too will die,
these are the times we know, for now we are-
alive. And things more than visible, invade…
conquer the Eye, dear heavens – things more than
invisible,transport/ rescue our Eye.
( break gently to my eyes : sometimes I cannot take too much reality. Rather just watch a movie about nice things, dear God why is it a time tested non-myth : Pain always gets across, what years of wisdom cannot ; please someone change that news channel, re – write this Uttarakhand tragedy. It involves too many lives, and villages, our favourite mountains and rivers, and one daren’t ask why; maybe that is why we obsessively write…)

7 billion of us, and rearing to go, each with a Life, ripe with wealth, whether we know it or not. And not just humans. We have the animal kingdom, and plant life.Terrain.Water bodies… silhouettes of culture, street-poetry and sounds of music. Laughter, tears, pain, silences, loss and gain. Exile and prodigals, passion and the purity of old places,
revisited, loved again. With new eyes. I never thought about the Carpathian mountains, or four-legged /two-legged creations that walk /run there among its acres of altitude ….
There are many stories out there, stories that can be told, stories that can inspire people, there are stories that are funny or stories that are motivating people or simply are beautiful, but there are also stories that can’t be told, because it is impossible to express in words their significance! You keep it in your soul and treasure it!
I was planning to write a story about my race and about me, but in this short trip to the absolutely wonderful countryside village at 1000 m altitude in the Carpathian mountains, I’ve learned that there are so much more interesting things to talk and think about!
All I can say is that I FELL IN LOVE with the world again, I hopelessly fell in love with life, and I fell in love with the wonderful mountains, but most of all I fell in love with the people, the people that so beautifully live there, or people that just came for the race, with every single person that I met, with every single runner, spectator, volunteer, organizer, winner or not winner, fast or slow, old or young, because they were so beautiful!
It was such a different world up there, magical, surreal, where the sky seems ready to fall on your head at any time, where people are still going to their garden for the food and not to the supermarket, a world where people are looking to the sky for weather forecast and not on the internet, a world where people are still connected to the nature and to each other. Like this old lady that lives on the mountain and every year she comes out at her gate to give runners a fresh glass of water from her garden spring!
And I remember very well how a few days before this race feeling tired I was asking myself why am I doing this for!!! Ohhh dear God, did I find out again, what is running giving me?!!!!
I experienced it again maybe at a greater length and deeper in my heart than ever before! Every time I go to a race I feel like I am taken out of my world and thrown into this crowd of people where I feel love, and beauty and magic!
And it will never cease to amaze me how a simple thing like running can change the world and the perspective so much, and especially when happens so close to the sky, yes maybe because we were closer to the sky things started to seem miracles! And people angels, like in the stories we loved to hear when we were kids!
So running is so much more than moving faster than walking, running is a place where you can go and find a better you, it is a place where you can go and find a better world, it is a place where magic happens!
